Ski and Snowboard Club Vail dominated the U14 Rocky/Central Junior Championships, held at Winter Park Resort last month. SSCV Alpine athletes claimed 24 podiums, including wins in eight of the 12 races contested across four days of racing.
“I am thrilled with our athletes’ performances, individually and collectively,” stated coach Adam Chadbourne.
The Rocky/Central is one of three regions in the U.S. Alpine program. Held from March 13-16, the Junior Championships featured a super-G, two giant slaloms, two slaloms and a parallel dual slalom. Athletes qualified for the event based on performances from either the U14 event at Breckenridge on Jan. 26-27 or the Vail slalom and GS held Feb. 16-17. SSCV had 25 of its 27 enrolled athletes qualify, said coach Shelbie Osak.
“Each and every athlete showed great tenacity and determination to perform their best,” she stated. “Not only that, their great sportsmanship to their teammates and towards other teams was remarkable.”
SSCV’s Kristina Shamshuryn won the super-G, both slalom races, one of the GS competitions and the parallel event en route to securing the overall title. She led an SSCV sweep in all five of the aforementioned races. Brittany Freudenberger, Winter Phillips and Hailey Anderson finished second, third and fourth in the overall, respectively.

“I am so proud of this team. Watching them dominate most of the podium, which is something you don’t see everyday, showed us that all their hard work and efforts really paid off,” Osak said.
On the boys side, Balthazar Sachs was the overall champion after claiming one win, three silvers and a bronze while Cody Martz Feige topped the entire super-G field and finished sixth in the overall. All told, the boys posted 24 top-10 finishes.
“From start to finish, they showed their determination and grit, pushing themselves against the competition. Every race was a testament to their hard work and it was inspiring to see them rise to the challenge when it mattered most,” fellow coach Andrew Jensen said. “This series was a great display of their growth and commitment and I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
While the plethora of podiums was nice, Chadbourne said he was just as proud of how the team moved up the ranks in every race.
“It was the norm for all of our athletes to move up 15 to 40-plus positions in each and every race,” he stated. “This is an exceptional group of young people who are also exceptional ski racers. Not every year goes like this, to say the least.”
