Prep notebook: 5 Eagle County basketball players earn all-state honors

Five Eagle County basketball players earned all-state honorable mention as the 2024-25 teams were presented by CHSAANow.com and MaxPreps on Monday.

Battle Mountain guard Izzy Kovacik and Eagle Valley power forward Addison Mandeville each earned honorable mention at the 5A class, as did Eagle Valley’s Brian Fontana and Dylan Zoller. Vail Mountain School’s Charlie Vidal earned 2A honorable mention honors after leading the Gore Rangers to a 13-7 record. Vidal led the team in points (13.7), rebounds (7.8) and shooting percentage (52%).

Kovacik averaged 8.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game for the Huskies, who finished the year with a 10-14 record.



Mandeville led the Devils to their first league title and home playoff win in her senior season. The three-sport athlete, who plans to play soccer next year at Metro State University, averaged 9.9 points per game for the Devils, who finished the year with a 13-12 record and 5-1 league mark before being ousted in the playoffs by two-time defending state champion Roosevelt.

Zoller was the best player for an Eagle Valley squad that went 17-7 and won a share of the 5A Western Slope. The senior guard averaged 20.4 points per game and also hauled in 7.4 rebounds a contest. He scored 44 points in the team’s win over Glenwood Springs on Feb. 18. Fontana was the Devils’ speedy, sharp-shooting court general. The senior averaged 11.4 points and 2.3 steals a game and led the team in 3-pointers made (48).

Eagle Valley’s season ended on Feb. 28 as the No. 12-seeded Devils lost to No. 21 Falcon 62-56 in the first round of the 5A playoffs.

Other prep notes: Vail Christian boys volleyball team splits midweek games

  • The Vail Christian boys volleyball team is 1-1 after splitting a pair of games against Hinkley and D’Evelyn this week. Luis Rico led the way with 13 kills as the Saints took down the Thunder 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 25-17 on Monday. Luke Geller and Ian Salyer each tallied nine kills apiece and Daniel Parez had 39 assists in the win. On Wednesday, Salyer had seven kills and Max Litviakov added five blocks, but the Jaguars left Vail with a 25-12, 25-16, 25-21 sweep. The Saints (1-1) travel to Aurora West College Prep Academy (5-3) on Friday night.
  • Grand Junction Central scored five runs in the third and fourth innings en route to a 17-7 win over Eagle Valley on Tuesday. Trevor Ziek led the Warriors, going 4-for-5 from the plate with four RBI. Ziek was a home run away from hitting for the cycle. Freshmen Hudson Rozga and Tavin Shreeve each tallied two hits for the Devils, who dropped to 1-4 on the year. Anthony Ehlert and Eli Adams each drove in two runs for Eagle Valley.
  • Steamboat Springs defeated Eagle Valley 2-0 in girls soccer on Thursday. The Devils (2-4-2 overall, 1-1-1 in the league) travel to Niwot on Saturday.
  • Battle Mountain defeated Eagle Valley 22-0 in girls lacrosse on Thursday in Gypsum. The Huskies improved to 5-0 on the year and will travel to Golden to face the Demons (3-1) on Saturday. The Devils (0-7) will look to get their first win of the year on April 1 against Fruita Monument.
  • The Battle Mountain girls soccer team defeated Palisade 4-1 Thursday night in Edwards. The Huskies improved to 3-1-2 on the year going into Saturday’s home match against Sand Creek (0-6).
