Letter: Passing Amendment 79 would not empower women
Once again we find ourselves anxiously anticipating a contentious election. Colorado is poised to further stir up controversy on a heated but important issue with Amendment 79.
The tragedy is that this issue should not be controversial. The most universally recognized human right is the right to life, to not be deliberately harmed by another person. The syllogism in defense of the pro-life position is rather simple. The unborn are living human beings, they are innocent of any wrongdoing, and it is wrong to willfully end the life of another innocent person; therefore it is wrong to end the life of an unborn child. The burden of proof lies firmly on those who reject these premises, and that burden has never been met.
Many try to dehumanize the unborn to conflate abortion with any other medical procedure. No one objects to removing a tumor or even a miscarried fetus. The moral distinction between those surgeries and destroying a healthy child could not be more plain. The value of a human being is not determined by their size, level of development, dependency on another, or how much they are wanted. We are intrinsically valuable because we are human beings. Passing Amendment 79 would not empower women, but rather perpetuate humanity’s long list of abuses against those who are deemed inferior.
