Lindsey Vonn was the top American in the FIS World Cup super-G in La Thuile, Italy, on Friday. The 40-year-old blitzed the 3 Franco Berthod slope in 58.65 seconds to place 13th as Federica Brignone won her 10th race of the season by 0.01 over countrywoman Sofia Goggia.
“I think today was definitely better than yesterday,” Vonn said to U.S. Ski and Snowboard media liaison Sierra Ryder. “But I wish I would have been able to ski a little bit faster. I’m just right on the wrong side of the tenths today.”
Fresh off a speed weekend in Kvitfjell, Norway that saw her place 13th, 16th and 16th in a pair of downhills and one super-G, Vonn posted a DNF in Thursday’s race in Italy. On Friday, warm weather led to a sloppier, slower course for later racers. Gunning it from the gate in bib No. 4, Vonn took advantage of her early start. She had just the 34th-best opening split, but found her groove at the bottom of the hill, posting the sixth-fastest final sector.
“I think for me, it was important to get to the finish line today,” Vonn said. “My season has been really up and down, so it’s a solid run and gives me good confidence going into the Finals.”
Lauren Macuga and Jackie Wiles placed 19th and 30th, respectively while Breezy Johnson, Tricia Mangan, Keely Cashman and Allison Mollin ended up outside the points in 32nd, 34th, 37th and 44th.

Similar to Vonn, Brignone continued to defy the rules of aging, claiming a career-best 14th podium of the year. The 34-year-old now leads the overall, downhill and super-G standings and is second by 20 points in the GS. She could become just the fifth skier to win four globes in one season as the circuit heads to Sun Valley for the World Cup Finals.

“There’s still a race to go, and I know Lara (Gut-Behrami) really well; she’s not going to leave me alone with that bib. It’s going to be a good fight so I need to concentrate,” Brignone told FIS. “I hope I can still have some energy to give in the finals and then we will see.”
Walczyk, Johnson, Del Bosco named to freestyle worlds team
Three freestyle athletes with Eagle County ties are headed to the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships in St. Moritz and Engadin, Switzerland, March 18-30.
Mogul skiers Dylan Walczyk and Tess Johnson were named to the eight-member moguls team and Chris Del Bosco is one of two ski cross athletes set to represent the U.S. It will be sixth worlds team for Walczyk, the third for Johnson and the ninth for Del Bosco, who has been at every worlds since 2009.
Johnson is coming off her best season as a pro. The 24-year-old had three podiums and her first win in seven years en route to a third-place overall finish in the mogul season standings. At the 2019 Deer Valley worlds, Johnson earned a bronze in the dual moguls. In Almaty, Kazakhstan, in 2021, she was fifth and 11th in the duals and individual events, respectively.

Walczyk capped off his 2024-25 campaign with two top-10s, including a fourth place in the dual moguls, at the final World Cup of the season in Livigno on March 11 and 12. The 31-year-old’s best world championship finish is eighth, also in Deer Valley.
Del Bosco is 26th in cup standings. The 42-year-old posted a season-best sixth-place result in Gudauri on Feb. 28. Del Bosco won a gold medal for Canada at the 2011 world championships.
Mogul qualifications for men and women are March 18, with the finals following on March 19 at 4:30 a.m. MST on skiandsnowboard.live. The dual moguls competition is March 21 at 7:30 a.m. MST. Ski cross finals are March 22 at 4 a.m. MST, also on skiandsnowboard.live. The men’s and women’s ski cross team finals are March 23 at 4:30 a.m.
