A cappella comes to the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek with a blend of Broadway, Disney and jazz tunes through the 11-member Voctave on March 30.
Formed in 2015, the singers bring diverse backgrounds to the group, including musical theater, contemporary Christian music, barbershop, pop and choral music. However, they share the common experience of having performed in Epcot at Disney World. Somewhat ironically, they didn’t actually sing Disney music at Epcot. Yet, each share a love for Disney.
“So, to sing some of these songs is definitely big, but it’s the same thing on the Broadway side: We’ve got a lot of music theater performers, even some that have been on Broadway, so having that element of their life is kind of a cool piece, as well,” said Jamey Ray, Voctave producer and arranger.

“A lot of the a cappella groups out there all have their own sound, and that is the same truth with Voctave,” he said. “It’s not a pop a cappella group. It’s not a vocal jazz a cappella group. It’s kind of got its own nostalgic, and definitely Disney, influences within it.”
The family-friendly show features tunes from “Wicked,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Cinderella” and much more.

“You’ll probably recognize almost all of the songs if you are a Disney or Broadway fan in any capacity,” he said. “It’s definitely a throughline with all of the different songs and everything that we’ve got, but you’re going to hear a lot of talking that’s going to hopefully make you laugh and cry — and all the feelings. You’re going to get to know all of the singers — who they are and the different personalities that are on the stage. They’re not just standing there singing songs; that’s the main thing. I think what a lot of people don’t realize when they come to see Voctave is that it’s a show. It’s not just a concert.”
The group also differentiates the music it performs from pop music.
“There’s a lot of pop music out there that does not have any sort of chord structure to it. It’s just a very catchy melody with some basic rhythm tracks underneath it, but we are a vocal orchestra, so we need music that actually has an original orchestra underneath the original song; Disney and Broadway definitely provides that for us, to allow us to fill out what it is that we do,” he said, adding that each song carries a message. “There’s everything from just fun, silly songs to make the audience laugh — and for us to have fun with them — and then there’s the more serious ones that have a heavier, more poignant message.”
Audiences often enjoy hearing familiar songs, with their nostalgic elements, performed in a different way, namely, live a cappella, he said. And, they appreciate the group’s bond, which translates to the crowd.
“Because of the fact that we’ve been around each other for so long before and during this group, we’re a fun group. We actually like traveling together, we like being with each other, we like doing shows together and we spend a lot of time laughing,” he said. “It’s definitely an emotionally interactive show throughout, from top to bottom. It appeals to a wide audience range, whether they’ve heard us or not. I can promise they will enjoy something from our show after they leave.”
