Vail Recreation District concludes trail run series at Dyanfit Meadowgold 5k and 10k

About 175 runners met at the Meadow Mountain trailhead in Minturn on Saturday to compete in the final event of the Vail Recreation District’s trail run series. Five and 10-kilometer distances were offered, with athletes climbing 553 feet in the former distance and 1,362 in the latter.

Vail’s Zeke Smith won the men’s 5k in a time of 21 minutes, 46 seconds. Eagle 12-year-old Lindy Brummer (23:44) won the women’s division and finished fourth overall.

In the 10-kilometer distance, Vail’s Josh Smith (47:23) won his third race of the summer series while Ali Bender (57:13) claimed the women’s title.

“We ended the Dynafit Vail Trail Running Series with a gorgeous day on Meadow Mountain and a hint of gold in the aspens,” said Wyatt Smith, the recreation district’s sports coordinator.

The 7-race series began on May 18 with the Boneyard Boogie. After Saturday’s event, series awards were handed out during lunch. Four athletes — Frank Holmes, Darcy Beck, Lizzy Reed and Kelci Olson — competed in every single event.

“That’s over 80 kilometers of trail running here in the Vail valley,” Smith commented. “They are called our Vail Trail Running Series All-Stars!”

While the Dynafit Vail Trail Running Series is over, there are two more Mighty Marmot kids trail races this fall. Youth ages 4-10 will compete at the Minturn Bike Park on Sept. 20 and run at a new Beaver Creek course on Oct. 4. Interested runners can register at vailrec.com/might-marmot-kids-trail-races.

The Vail Recreation District is also preparing for the inaugural Cougar Ridge Classic on Sept. 28. The 26k point-to-point race will start at Lionshead Village in Vail and finish in Minturn.

The course traverses up Vail Mountain via Cabin Trail to Mid-Vail. The 3,265-foot climb concludes on Kinnickinnick Trail to Wildwood. Runners will continue toward Eagle’s Nest before a steady descent across Game Creek Bowl. Then racers will descend the technical Cougar Ridge singletrack trail to Minturn. Registration for the event is limited to 175 racers.

“We couldn’t have made this race series possible without all the VRD volunteers who graciously donate their time to cheer and support our racers,” Smith stated. “It’s starting to feel like fall, which is getting me excited for snow and our winter race series as well!”
