Vail officer seizes 40 pounds of PCP during traffic stop on Interstate 70
Suspicious driving leads to major drug find
A Vail Police officer assigned to the Eagle County GRANITE Task Force found 40 pounds of liquid PCP in a vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 on Friday, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The GRANITE team consists of law enforcement professionals from the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, the Vail Police Department, and other local agencies.
During the traffic stop, the officer spoke with the occupants, who made statements that raised the officer’s suspicions of further criminal activity. The officer deployed K-9 Mojo, a trained narcotics detection dog, to sniff around the vehicle for any signs of illegal drugs. Mojo indicated multiple positive alerts, suggesting the presence of narcotics inside the car. With probable cause established by these alerts, the officers searched the vehicle. During the search, they discovered two 5-gallon containers in the trunk.
Upon conducting field tests on the liquid inside the containers, the substance tested presumptively positive for narcotics. In collaboration with Homeland Security, additional testing confirmed that the liquid inside the containers was liquid PCP.
The driver of the vehicle, Brian Kirk Lockett, 46, and the passenger, Shanella Lanae Jones, 43, both from Kansas City, are currently being held at the Eagle County Detention Facility. Each has a bond set at $100,000. Each faces the following charges:
