Process begins to name a new Eagle County clerk and recorder

Commissioners will appoint replacement after incumbent Regina O'Brien's resignation

The Eagle County Board of Commissioners is now accepting resumes and letters of interest to begin the process to appoint a new Eagle County clerk and recorder.

Current Clerk and Recorder Regina O’Brien resigned from her position effective Jan. 4 to accept a new position as assistant to the county manager. Chief Deputy Clerk and Recorder Stacey Jones has assumed the duties of the office until the commissioners appoint a replacement.

Information, including a list of responsibilities, salary and details about the appointment process and how interested persons may apply is available on Eagle County’s website. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 20 at midnight.

Interviews with candidates will begin after the deadline in the final week of January and the first week of February. A resolution announcing the appointment is expected by Feb. 11.

The clerk and recorder is an elected position. When elected officials vacate their office, the Board of County Commissioners appoints a qualified person to fill the vacancy until a successor is elected.

In this case, the appointed clerk will serve from the date of appointment until the next general election in November 2026, at which time the individual will be eligible to run for office. The winner of the election will then fill the remainder of the current term of the clerk and recorder, which expires on Jan. 12, 2027, with a new four-year term beginning on that date. The new clerk and recorder will then be required to run for office at four-year intervals, along with all other elected county officials.
