Prep notebook: Battle Mountain baseball doubles down on Moffat County

Battle Mountain dominated both games of a doubleheader against Moffat County on Saturday in Edwards. The Huskies scored six runs in the first inning en route to an 15-0 victory in the first game and scored 18 unanswered in an 18-1 victory in the afternoon.

In the early contest, Cole Lewis went 2-for-3 from the plate while Zach Irwin had two stolen bases, two RBIs and two runs scored. Shaeffer Dodds struck out nine in a perfect four-inning outing on the mound. In the second game, Moffat struck first, with Owen Hill scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning. The Huskies retaliated quickly, however, pouring in eight runs in the second and 10 more in the third. William Townsend struck out five in the first two innings to pick up the win while Irwin struck out five more for the save.
The Huskies (7-3) host Coal Ridge (10-2-1), the No. 2-ranked team in 3A, on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Eagle Valley split a home doubleheader against Rifle on Saturday. In the first game, Eagle Valley pitcher James Bivins struck out nine and allowed just two hits and one run in five innings and Ricky Guitierrez, Hudson Rozga, Anthony Ehlert, Xander DeHerrera and Eli Adams each collected hits for the Devils. But Rifle’s Ryder Bjurstrom scored on a passed ball in the top of the third and struck out nine in seven shutout innings to help his team cruise to a 2-0 win.
Eagle Valley won the second game 13-12 on a walk-off double by DeHerrera in the bottom of the seventh inning. The junior went 3-for-5 from the plate with two RBI. Senior Ozlin Rocha collected three hits in four at bats for the Devils, who used four different pitchers to make it to the finish line. Eagle Valley (3-7 overall, 1-1 league) hosts Steamboat Springs next Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Other prep notes: Battle Mountain girls lacrosse loses tight battle against Roaring Fork

- The Battle Mountain girls lacrosse team fell to Roaring Fork 16-15 in Edwards on Friday night. The Huskies received six goals from Izzy Kovacik. Gracyn Nestlerode tallied three goals and three assists and Murphy Werner added three goals as well for Battle Mountain, which had six penalties in the game and played much of the second half shorthanded. The Huskies fell to 8-2 while Roaring Fork improved to 6-2 on the season.
- The Vail Mountain School girls soccer team is 5-2-1 after a 5-0 win over Rifle on Thursday and a 1-0 loss to Mullen on Saturday. The Gore Rangers will look to get back in the win column at home against Steamboat Springs on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
