Obituary: Margaret Jean (“Peggy”) Buchannan

July 11, 1932 – February 12, 2025
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Peggy, who provided joy to all who met her and left us peacefully on February 12, 2025, at the age of 92. She was an active daughter, wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend and was surrounded by love at her passing.
Peggy was born on July 11, 1932, in Highland Park, IL and her life was a testament to the values of love, kindness, adventure and resilience. She dedicated her life to her family, always putting the needs of her loved ones before her own. Her unwavering support for her family and children and boundless love for adventure were the cornerstones of her values.
Her personal and professional life was nothing less. From her years as a cheerful young camp counselor to many more years as an elementary school teacher, she touched the lives of many youngsters. Her colleagues remember her as a compassionate and hard-working individual, always ready to lend a helping hand and offer words of encouragement.
Peggy had a passion for the out of doors, that led her to bask in the high mountain wildflowers, and ski and scuba dive into her eighties. Her talents in competitive Masters swimming, skiing, hiking, snowshoeing and beyond brought joy to those who joined her. She loved working with Vail Guest Services for decades and the Children’s Center in Lionshead yet made sure she was part of Vail Club 50 and the Arlberg Club in Winter Park. Wherever people were, Peggy would surely be there towing a few more friends with her. She was curious about people and cultures, adventuring to countries all over the world. Her desire to volunteer never ended. She was an avid animal lover giving so many rescue animals another chance at a loving life.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Peggy is survived by her children, Scott Kepner (wife Melissa), Lori Kepner, Brian Kepner, and Kim Sybounmy (husband Long), Scott Buchannan (wife Ellen) and Lori Parker; her grandchildren, Jessica Willis (husband Morgan), Taylor Grandchamp (wife Ruby-Beth), Hailey Dubbs (husband Garry), Blake Buchannan (wife Becky), Harrison, Kate and Claire Kepner, Claire and Elliott Kepner, Skylar, Larkyn and Knytly Sybounmy; and her great-grandchildren, Harper and Finley Willis, Parker and Tanner Buchannan, Lazuli Buitechamp, and Mary Adeline Dubbs. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those that will follow her life example.
A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held in the Vail Valley this summer where family and friends will be invited to gather to share memories and joy.
Our hearts are not heavy with sorrow but lightened by Peggy’s joyful smile. We find comfort in knowing that Mom is at peace. Her spirit will continue to guide us, and her love will remain with us always.
Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, Karl D King and Eugenia B Moore, stepmother Helen King, husband Jack Buchannan, brother David King, sister Janet Vineyard, and grandson Christopher Grandchamp.
Everyone needs a Peggy in their life. Our family is fortunate to have shared her with the world.
