Eagle County’s population is aging, but that population is an active group.

Eagle County Healthy Aging Manager Carly Rietmann said the annual expo is just part of the services the office provides.
One popular event is the Aging Well speaker series, presented in cooperation with Colorado Mountain College at Edwards. Those talks, in partnership with Caregiver Connections, are aimed at those 60 and older. But, Rietmann said, people of just about any age can learn from the talks.

“Even if you’re 50, if you’re learning some of these things now, you’re setting yourself up for a better process (down the road),” Rietmann said.
Then there are the twice-weekly senior lunches, held in Minturn, Eagle and El Jebel. If you went to one of those lunches say, a decade ago, you’d talk with people who’d been in the community for most of their lives. That’s changed a bit over the years, Rietmann said.
Over the past several years, a number of people have moved to the county to be closer to adult children and grandchildren, Rietmann said. Those people are looking to make new connections, and the senior center lunches, exercise classes and other events provide those connections, she said.
“People are hungry for interaction and engagement,” Rietmann said, adding that of the newer attendees at the events, the age is dropping, with more people there now in the 70 to 75 age range.
Events including the Healthy Aging Expo provide another way for older county residents to stay engaged with each other and the broader community. And the partners in the event are also looking for new ways to help.
In a release about the expo, Mountain Recreation Edwards Facilities Supervisor Brad Johnson said, “We are actively exploring additional opportunities to expand our program offerings for older adults.”
