The driver of a vehicle that crashed through a row of metal barricades and flipped on its roof near Walmart has been hospitalized but is doing OK, Avon Police Chief Greg Daly confirmed on Tuesday.

The only other occupant in the vehicle was the driver’s cat, which was unharmed in the incident, Daly said.

The incident happened at about 6 p.m. on Monday and not much information was available as to how it happened, Daly said.

“We are suspecting there may have been a medical-related issue, so at this point in time we’re not currently issuing any ticket regarding it, but we’re still investigating it,” Daly said.

The incident happened at the south end of the Walmart/Home Depot parking lot in East Avon, where a row of metal fencing creates a barrier between Yoder Road and a steep embankment that flanks the Union Pacific’s dormant railroad tracks below.

After crashing through the metal fencing, the vehicle — a Ford Econoline van with Florida licence plates — flipped onto its roof, breaking the vehicle’s windows and scattering the occupant’s belongings about the area.

The driver was assisted briefly at the scene before being transported to Vail Health hospital, Daly said.
