AVON — Dozens of local Class of 2016 graduates received a record amount of scholarships for their future education.
The Vail Valley Foundation’s YouthPower365’s annual scholarship night saw 55 local students receive 72 scholarships worth more than $250,500. It’s not only the largest number of scholarship recipients and applicants (303), it’s also the most money ever given away to local graduates.
The scholarships are funded by a variety of local organizations and individuals, and range from one-time $500 awards, to four-year scholarships worth up to $20,000.
More multi-year scholarships than ever were awarded this year.
“Many of the students receiving these awards would not have the opportunity to go to college without these scholarships,” said Lindsey Myers, program manager with the Vail Valley Foundation’s YouthPower365. “We are proud to be part of building the future of Eagle County.”

Matthews wins Daniels Scholarship
One of Colorado’s most prestigious scholarship programs tapped an Eagle Valley High School graduate for a full ride.
McKensey Matthews was awarded the prestigious Daniels Fund Scholarship. She was selected from a pool of more than 2,200 applicants from four states, one of only 226 to win a scholarship.
Matthews graduated from Eagle Valley High School a semester early and has been attending Brigham Young University at Provo, Utah, since January, majoring in political science with an emphasis and research and analysis.
Because of the Colorado Mountain College credits she earned in high school, Matthews heads to BYU as a junior. After BYU, she’ll head to graduate school.
The Daniels Fund Scholarship is a full ride awarded to graduating high school seniors from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah or Wyoming. The scholarship is based on character, leadership and community service.
Along with the scholarship, Daniels Scholars receive perks such as a new laptop, the ability to attend exclusive programs and events, and an alumni support network.
The Daniels Scholarship Program has provided almost $130 million in undergraduate scholarships to more than 3,250 students since June 2015.
