EAGLE — With more than 30 years of hard work under his belt, Steve “Mudflap” McGrew has reached the point where clubs are looking for him … rather than the other way around. He’s been playing his “southern-fried” humor since long before it became fashionable in clubs throughout the country. His exuberant personality and keenly humorous observations will be on full display Saturday at 8 p.m. on the stage of the Back Bowl when Comedy Night at the Bowlmor returns.
McGrew actually started his working career in the newsroom of the Houston Chronicle in the mid ’70s, (he’s much, much older than he looks), where he worked as a cartoonist. With a reputation for translating his poignant wit through the pen, he soon ventured onto the stage of a local comedy club for an amateur night where his humor blended perfectly with his energetic personality in a way that drawing cartoons couldn’t. His uncanny ability to connect with his audience didn’t go unnoticed, and soon he became a regular at Houston’s popular Comedy Workshop, which was a hotbed for up-and-coming “redneck” comics.
After earning a spot as a semifinalist on Showtime’s iconic comedy showcase, “Full Frontal Comedy,” McGrew has gone on to appear on a variety of comedy showcases, including A&E’s “Evening at the Improv,” Showtime’s “Comedy All Stars,” Caroline’s “Comedy Hour,” TNN’s “Nashville Now,” “Music City Tonight and Funny Business,” VH-1’s “Stand Up, Stand Up” and MTV’s “Half Hour Comedy Show.” Ultimately, he earned his own half-hour comedy special on Comedy Central.
When not working clubs and TV, he has opened for many of the top comedy and musical acts of the day, working with entertainers as diverse as Billy Crystal, Sam Kinison, Dolly Parton, B.B. King and The Doobie Brothers and many more.
McGrew’s fast-paced, unconventional style and energetic delivery have led to him being invited to appear in the UK and Canada as a headliner both on stage and TV. He has also made a series of recorded shows on CD and DVD and hosts his own podcast.
