On paper, Elisabeth Bocock wouldn’t have given herself too much of a chance to walk away from Monday’s giant slalom with her second national title.
“I had pretty low expectations just because my nemesis in terms of course sets is straight and a lot of distance,” the 19-year-old said after the second day of competition at the U.S. Alpine Championships in Vail. “And that’s what the second run was here today.”
Bocock, who finished third in the super-G on Sunday, defied the odds, jumping from third to first in the second run. The Salt Lake City-native scorched the Golden Peak course with a two-run time of 2 minutes, 30.16 seconds. 2022 Olympian A.J. Hurt (2:30.45) finished second and 2023 World Championship gold medalist Nina O’Brien (2:31.15) claimed the bronze.

“I knew that I was close,” Bocock said. “So I was just trying to be a little more aggressive in sections I wasn’t before, grab my tuck here and there, be a little more clear and hope those would add up. And they did, which was sweet.”
Former Ski and Snowboard Club Vail athlete Liv Moritz was in second — just 0.04 seconds behind O’Brien — after the first run, but wound up fifth overall.

“I was definitely a little bit nervous, but also I didn’t put the expectation onto myself to win or get a podium — but I did know it was possible,” the 2025 NorAm slalom overall champion said of her mentality going into the second run. “So, I just tried to ski my hardest again.”

The University of Denver dual-sport star was mostly satisfied with her performance, but knows she lost time navigating the soft snow along the final pitch.
“I was really happy with my first run,” she said. “For the second run, I just tried to ski with intensity and it didn’t quite work out for me. I think it was a little bit too dirty. But in the moment it felt pretty good.”
Her twin sister, Kjersti, moved up two places to finish sixth overall while fellow former SSCV athlete Kaitlin Keane and Emma Resnick were 13th and 18th. Solveig Moritz (20th) and Maizy Douglas (23rd) were the only current club athletes to place in the top 30.
The four-day championship event concludes on Tuesday with the men’s and women’s slaloms.
