TELLURIDE — February has been good to Will Gregorak.

Gregorak, a Ski & Snowboard Club Vail racer, has seen his points drop race after race this month, with another fall coming Thursday.

Thanks to a sizable win at a Colorado Ski Cup giant slalom in Telluride, Gregorak put himself in a good position for when the new International Ski Federation points list comes out.

“I got good results out of (Thursday’s) race,” Gregorak said. “I think my slalom points will be about 27 and my giant slalom will be about 25 or 26, which is around top five in the world for my birth year.”

Gregorak had the two top runs, coming in at a combined 1 minute, 33.31 seconds. SSCV’s John Kemp was second at 1:34.98. Two other SSCV racers placed in the top 15.

Earlier this month, Gregorak and teammates were in Italy for some technical races.

“It went well there,” Gregorak said. “I got results in giant slalom and slalom and skied well every day. It’s good experience. The people who have the same points in Europe ski a lot faster than those in the United States, and the fields are a lot deeper there.”

On the girls side, SSCV’s Erika Ghent jumped up one spot in her second run to win Thursday’s giant slalom.

“It was a fun race,” said Ghent, whose combined time was 0.04 seconds better than Ann West. “She had a good first run, and I was a little passive on my first run but put it down on my second run.”

SSCV’s Joelle Chevalier was fifth, while five more SSCV racers were in the top 20. The Colorado Ski Cup continues with another giant slalom followed by a pair of slalom races over the weekend.
